Change this one thing to change your life
Dec 05, 2021
What if I said that by only learning one specific thing you could completely change your life forever?
Would you believe me?
Well, it’s true.
The number one thing that is holding you back from creating the life you want, the health you want, the relationships you want, the impact you want, the money you want, the business you want, is your mindset.
Most people think that they are not living the life they want because of their circumstances,
Or because of their genetics,
Or because of other people.
But the secret to living the life that you want is one thing, and one thing only.
The secret to life is understanding that if you are not currently at the level you want in an area of your life, or not progressing towards that area, the only problem you have is a thinking problem.
The thinking you have been doing has gotten you to where you are today.
If you want something different, you need to change you thinking in that area to create a different result.
This is a fundamental principle of life and success.
Yet so many people do not know this or choose not to believe this (and then they stay stuck).
There is a reason that the definition of insanity is:
“..doing the same thing again and again expecting a different result.”
A different result requires doing something different and doing something different requires new thinking.
When you accept this fundamental life-principle your life will change forever.
So how can I start to change my thinking, you might ask.
And if that is your next question, CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are already ahead of so many people who are not willing to accept this principle.
So, while they continue to stay stuck in denial blaming everything else, you are now ready to start changing your thinking, and take your life to the next level.
Patterns of thinking, feeling and behavior.
Awareness is your first step to changing your thinking.
Start to notice how specific patterns of thinking give you specific patterns of feelings, which in turn makes you do specific patterns of behaviors.
For example:
If you are about to speak on stage in front of hundreds of people and your thinking is all about how everyone will judge you and how you might forget your supposed to say you are probably going to feel very nervous and afraid.
If your thinking before going on stage is all about how awesome the project that you are going to talk about is and that you are lucking forward to sharing it with others because it will benefit their lives then you are probably going to feel excited, passionate, and happy.
Same circumstances.
Different thinking.
And completely different emotions.
Lets say that these two people weren’t booked to go on stage, but they were given the opportunity to present their projects on stage.
The person with the first pattern of thinking might decline the offer because the whole situation is too uncomfortable.
While the second person will gladly present on stage and accepts the offer.
These two people had the same circumstances, and same skill set. But one way of thinking caused a specific pattern of emotions and behavior, and the other way of thinking caused a completely different cascade of emotions and behaviors.
And this happens all the time.
Our thinking creates our emotions, and our emotions drive our behaviors.
So, we need to get really good at mastering our thinking, so that we can master our emotions, so that we can master our behaviors.
Practice living in positivity bias
According to flow-researcher Steven Kotler, the Amygdala (which is a part of our brain important for emotional processing) takes in 6-9 negative bits of information for every positive one. This happens because its main job is to scan the environment for dangers to keep us alive.
This means that we need to get really good at
- Finding the good in the moment
- Finding the good in other people
- Looking for learning opportunities
When we practice these three things deliberately we see more of the good in the world that is already around us, but we weren’t noticing before through all the noise.
This helps us live in more positive emotions.
And positive emotions will all you to more easily do the behaviors that will help you progress towards your goals.
Like author B.J Fogg says, “We change best when happy”.
This is so true.
Get enough reps in
Now you have two really powerful tools to start to practice changing your thinking.
- Awareness of patterns of thinking, feelings and behavior.
- Positivity bias.
The last thing you need to do now is practice.
Knowledge is not power.
Knowledge is only potential power.
Knowledge with execution is power.
To train your mind you need to practice daily, until this way of thinking becomes who you are.
Then you become unstoppable.
